How It Works

HOW IT WORKS

First, we uncover their story. Then, we plan your journey.

Every Strade di Memoria experience begins with archival research and grows into a private family itinerary shaped by the evidence, your interests, and the people traveling with you.

01 · Tell us what you know

We begin with a consultation about your relative and your family. A name, approximate dates, a unit, letters, photographs, medals, or remembered stories can all be useful—but you do not need a complete collection of documents to begin.

We also learn about the family members who may travel, what you hope to discover, and any accessibility, pacing, or travel considerations.

02 · We follow the records

We investigate surviving military and historical sources, which may include enlistment and separation records, morning reports, unit histories, maps, general orders, and relevant local records. Availability varies substantially from person to person.

Our findings distinguish documented facts, well-supported interpretations, and unresolved questions. Research cannot guarantee a complete service history or an exact location for every day of the war.

03 · Your printed dossier arrives

Before the itinerary is finalized, we deliver a professionally written and printed dossier for your family to read and share. Depending on the available records, it may contain:

A narrative of the servicemember’s service; a chronological timeline; reproductions of key records; annotated historical and modern maps; unit and Italian historical context; citations; and a guide to remaining questions.

We then meet to discuss the findings and the places that may be meaningful to visit. This is a milestone in its own right: the research belongs to your family whether or not you decide to travel.

04 · We design the journey together

The dossier becomes the foundation for a private itinerary. We balance historically meaningful destinations with the pleasures of Italy: neighborhoods, architecture, local food, regional traditions, and time to enjoy one another’s company.

Your family helps set the pace, length, travel style, and priorities. We do not promise visits to specific locations until the research and practical feasibility have been assessed.

05 · Travel with us in Italy

Our planned signature experience is a personally accompanied private family journey, with historical interpretation and Italian cultural perspective throughout the trip. This escorted service is currently in development; dates, inclusions, travel arrangements, and prices will be confirmed before bookings open.

When available, the trip will be supported by a personalized journey book with the itinerary, historical notes, and space for your family’s own reflections.

What if the records are incomplete?

That is a normal part of historical research. We explain gaps clearly, use unit-level evidence responsibly, and design journeys around the strongest available connections. An honest account of what is unknown is part of the value of professional archival work.
